Badminton Player Profile: Lee Chong Wei

Lee Chong Wei (Simplified Chinese: 李宗伟 / Traditional Chinese: 李宗偉) (Pinyin:Li Zōng Wěi) (born 21 October 1982 in Bagan Serai, Perak) is a professional badminton player from Malaysia who resides in Bukit Mertajam. As a singles player, Lee was ranked first worldwide for 199 consecutive weeks from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012. He is the third Malaysian men's singles shuttler after Rashid Sidek and Roslin Hashim to achieve such a ranking (since official rankings were first kept in the 1980s), and is the only Malaysian shuttler to hold the ranking for more than two weeks.

Lee is a silver medalist in both the 2012 Olympic Games and 2008 Olympic Games, thus becoming the first Malaysian to reach the final of the men's singles event and ending Malaysia's Olympic medal drought since the 1996 Games. This achievement also earned him the title Datuk, and a description by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak as a national hero. He repeated the achievement four years later in London, thus making him the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history.

Briton Jamie Murray and partner John Peers beat Bob and Mike Bryan to win the US Men's Clay Court Championship.

The unseeded pair saved a match point to win 1-6 7-6 (7-3) 12-10 and inflict the American number one seeds' first defeat in a final this season.
Murray, brother of world singles number two Andy, and his Australian partner also beat fourth seeds Eric Butorac and Jonathan Erlich in Houston.
"Any time you beat the Bryans you're going to be happy," said Murray.
"It's tough to go out against them in a final, particularly for them playing in the States as the crowd was right behind them.
"We did well to come back, we showed good character. Slowly but surely we started to play good tennis."
It was Murray and Australian Peers' sixth tournament as a pairing, and their best result since their semi-final run at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier back in February.
Murray's last tournament wins came back in 2011 when he won titles in Tokyo and Metz with brother Andy and Andre Sa respectively, while this Houston success was also his first tournament win on clay.

Badminton Event Result - SKYCITY New Zealand Badminton Open 2013 - Final Result

The young talent wasn’t quite able to master the more experienced players in the finals of the SKYCITY New Zealand Badminton Open at the North Shore Events Centre today.

China and Indonesia won two titles a piece and Japan also took a victory in front of what was a big and enthusiastic crowd at the US$50,000 World Series Event with three matches taking over an hour to complete.

In an all-Indonesian affair the fifth seeds Praveen Jordan and Vita Marissa defeated the top seeded countrymen and world No12 pair, Riky Widianto and Puspita Richi Dili 21-18, 21-8 in the mixed doubles final to start the day.

In the women’s singles the 15-year-old prodigy Akane Yamaguichi from Japan, who was playing in her first senior tournament outside of home nation, looked set to win the title but eventually fell 21-17, 18-21, 22-20 to the third seed and world No56 Deng Xuan of China.

The men’s singles featured 216th ranked Xue Song, a qualifier and the finalist a the Australian Open last week, who had plenty of opportunities to win the title but former winner Riichi Takeshita of Japan proved to be too steady on the vital points. The eleventh seeded Japanese player won 21-16, 16-21, 21-17 in just over an hour. However the results of the past two weeks for Song will no doubt have him on the radar of the very powerful Chinese Federation as they look towards the next Olympics.

The longest contest of the finals day was the women’s doubles which took one hour 13 minutes in which the Chinese pair of Dongni Ou and Yuanting Tang needed three games to overcome the top 20 ranked pair of Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Khe Wei Woon.

Indonesia’s Angga Pratama and Ryan Saputro dominated the men’s doubles final winning in straight games over an unseeded Chinese pair. The Indonesians ranked 12 in the world won 21-6, 22-20.

The Championships, Wimbledon

The Championships, Wimbledon, "The Wimbledon Championships" or simply Wimbledon (also informally known as "The British Open"), is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and widely considered to be the biggest and the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the other three majors being the Australian Open, French Open and US Open. Wimbledon is the only Major still played on grass, the game's original surface, which gave the game its original name of "lawn tennis".

The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with the Ladies' and Gentlemen's Singles Final, scheduled for the second Saturday and Sunday respectively. Each year five major events are contested, as well as four junior events and three invitational events.

The hard court (Plexicushion) Australian Open and clay court French Open precede Wimbledon in the year, and the hard court (DecoTurf) US Open follows. For men, the grass court Queen's Club Championships, also in London, and the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, serve as warm-up events; for women, the AEGON Classic in Birmingham and two joint events, the UNICEF Open in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands and the Eastbourne International.

Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators, and Royal patronage. The tournament is also notable for the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts. In 2009, Wimbledon's Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to lessen the loss of playing time due to rain.

Wimbledon consists of five main events, four junior events and four invitation events.

Main events
The five main events, and the number of players (or teams, in the case of doubles) are:
Gentlemen's Singles (128)
Ladies' Singles (128)
Gentlemen's Doubles (64)
Ladies' Doubles (64)
Mixed Doubles (64)

Junior events
The four junior events and the number of players or teams are:
Boys' Singles (64)
Girls' Singles (64)
Boys' Doubles (32)
Girls' Doubles (32)
Disabled Doubles (12)
No mixed doubles event is held at this level.

Invitation events
The five invitational events and the number of pairs are:
Gentlemen's Invitation Doubles (8 pairs Round Robin)
Senior Gentlemen's Invitation Doubles (8 pairs Round Robin)
Ladies' Invitation Doubles (8 pairs Round Robin)
Gentlemen's Wheelchair Doubles (4 pairs)
Ladies' Wheelchair Doubles (4 pairs)

Match formats
Matches in the Gentlemen's Singles and Gentlemen's Doubles are best-of-five sets, in all other events are best-of-three sets. A tiebreak game is played if the score reaches 6–6 in any set except the fifth (in a five-set match) or the third (in a three-set match), in which case a two-game lead must be reached.

All events are single-elimination tournaments, except for the Gentlemen's, Senior Gentlemen's and the Ladies' Invitation Doubles, which are round-robin tournaments.
Until 1922, the winners of the previous year's competition (except in the Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles) were automatically granted byes into the final round (then known as the challenge round). This led to many winners retaining their titles in successive years, as they were able to rest while their opponent competed from the start of the competition. From 1922, the prior year's champions were required to play all the rounds, like other tournament competitors.

Yonex Australian Badminton Open 2013 Final Round-up

Women's Doubles

During the first set, the Indonesian ladies, Vita Marissa and Aprilsasi Variella, led all the way, but as the Thais kept narrowing the deficit until at 18-20, the most experienced and oldest on court, Marissa, sensed it was the moment to up the urgency stakes. She finally wound up and applied the full force of her smash to speed up the game to secure it, 21-19.

This is the second time this week opponents have prevented the Thai youngster with the foundtain of spikey hair, Sapisiree Taerattanachai, playing at the speed she prefers. The Thais were clearing trying to up the ante, but the Indonesians were having none of it. Variella occasionally increased the pace with her forehand smash, and then decreased it again within the same point with her relaxed backhand cross court drop shot, or up the line clear to frustrate the Thais.

Marissa now and then used her mixed doubles pedigree to sneak up and kill unsuspecting shuttles at the net.

Managing her partner Variella's confidence was the key to Marissa winning, as she knew her young partner would then produce a personal best. The Indonesians won in straight sets, 21-15 in the second, and lifted their first title together after being friends for seven years.

Women's Singles

Someone had to win the first set where both players showed their contrasting range of shots. Both showed off wonderful angled shots, Japan's Sayaka Takahashi's mainly turning them down, and Nichaon Jindapon of Thailand, choosing to make hers criss cross the court.

Jindapon executed her trademark cross court net shots to earn three points in the first set and also displayed an untoucahable forehand version to show she can produce brilliance in either direction.

Nevertheless she fell victim to Takahashi's off forehand dropshots at the deuce stage, which she ought to have known by now these shots were lethal and lost, 22-20.

In the second set, Nichaon was choosing all the correct shots but overcooking them wide of the lines. Takahashi, resumed her aggressiveness at the change of ends and walloped a rather average Nichaon on this day to the tune of 21-10.

Mixed Doubles

The third seeded Indonesians, Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini, were happily implementing their game plan and demonstrating an easy understanding within their own partnership, whereas the seventh seeded Koreans, Shin Baek Cheol and Jang Ye Na, appeared at sea in terms of what to do in the first set, thus going down without much of a fight, 21-14. At this stage, the Indonesians easily read the holes in the court coverage of the Koreans, and as usual Fadhilah executed some very fine shotmaking on his return of mid court shuttles.

In the second set, the Koreans ceased playing inwardly and finally shone. Although, they admit to being a balanced partnership, again this week it would be Shin who decided to steer their strategy. They went to interval one point ahead. Indonesians scrapped to level 12-12, and buoyed by the louder Indonesian supported Fadhilah, turned on the exuberance and hammered the shuttle and also sent a wildly creative drive into his opponents left corner when they were expecting a another hammering.

The Koreans moved Shin to cover the fore and mid courts. He pressed too hard initally which made the score extra tense, but it only took one point to steady up. Shin bought his side game point in the second set. Jang stayed steady, if unremarkable, and bought them another set point opportunity at 23-22, courtesy of a reflex defence a smash came at her face. Shin was predictably the one to seal the deal 24-22 in their favour.

The slow to warm up Koreans finally hit their stride, but it was a case of two versus one because as Fadhilah began to cool by 10 per cent in terms of making inroads, Anggraini rose to the occasion to do strike at Shin. The best Jang could offer was her calm reliable short serving, but Shin was working overtime in the all departments from offense, defence, as well as creating the opportunities.

Eventually the Indonesians caught him out enough times to become victors 21-16 in the rubber.

Men's Doubles

In the all Indonesian final, the second seeded, Angga Pratama and Ryan Saputra, surged ahead at the eleventh hour to take the first set 22-20, against defending champion Hendra Setiawan, and new partner Mohammad Ahsan. The mood was decidedly lukewarm and littered with slight mis-hits and unforced errors on drive and drop shots by both sides as evidenced by the repeated "service over" announcements made by the umpire.

The tallest of the four, Saputra, was effective smashing both from the back and guarding the net, while Setiawan offered creativity in defensive situations, but terrible short serves which landed a couple of inches short. Mohammad Ahsan caught the disease too and therefore gifted the match to Saputra and Pratama. 22-20, 21-19.

Men's Singles

The first game in the all Chinese men's singles final was an illustration of what Xue Song does best, accuracy and dangerous from mid-court foreward, both in crouched defence or murdering any loose shuttles offered up by Tian. It was the kind of unhesitant abilities that eluded Lee Chong Wei yesterday as the nerves built for the Malaysian world number one.

Tian Houwei displayed how much steadier he is than his younger teammate in taking the second set 21-13. By the third game, we saw a different Xue, someone less judicious when to attack and using more brute force and he overplayed to give some points away. At the same time, Tian Houwei also applied brute force. The man with the better defence, Tian, ultimately dominated 21-12.

All England Open Badminton Championships

All England Open Badminton Championships
All England Open Badminton Championships

The All England Open Badminton Championships, or simply All England, is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious badminton tournaments. Played annually, it developed after the success of the world's first badminton tournament held in Guildford in 1898. The tournament was successfully organised on April 4, 1899, however only three categories (Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles) were originally staged. Both Men's and Women's Singles were added the following year. The first three tournaments were named "The Open English Championships". It was eventually considered (especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949) the unofficial world championship of the sport until 1977 when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships. Since 1984 the tournament has been exclusively sponsored by Yonex.

The tournaments were halted twice: during World War I from 1915 to 1919 and World War II from 1940 to 1946.

Squash equipment - Squash Racquet

Squash Racquets are governed by the rules of the game. Traditionally they were made of laminated wood (typically ash), with a small strung area using natural gut strings. After a rule change in the mid-1980s, they are now almost always made of composite materials or metals (graphite, kevlar, titanium, boron) with synthetic strings. Modern rackets have maximum dimensions of 686 mm (27.0 in) long and 215 mm (8.5 in) wide, with a maximum strung area of 500 square centimetres (90 sq in), the permitted maximum mass is 255 grams (9.0 oz), but most have a mass between 110 and 200 grams (4–7 oz.).
